Solving Techniques / 10
Pick one target word and hunt only for its first letter. On a 15 × 15 grid that letter usually appears several times, so you can ignore most of the noise.
Tip: circle first letters lightly in pencil on a printout, then confirm the rest of the path.
On Easy puzzles every word runs left to right or top to bottom. Read each row once, then each column, before looking anywhere else.
Tip: say the letters quietly; hearing a fragment such as RIV often finishes the word.
Medium puzzles add southeast and southwest slopes. Train your eye to step one row down and one column across at the same time.
Tip: a printed grid helps; tilt the page slightly so diagonals feel closer to horizontal.
Hard puzzles may hide words west, north, or up-diagonals. Reverse reading is the same straight-line rule, only the letters run against English reading order.
Tip: look for uncommon last letters such as Q, X, or Z; they make reverse words easier to spot.
A twelve-letter word occupies a large straight run. Once it is marked, the remaining short words have fewer places to hide.
Tip: sort your word bank by length before you start searching.
Two words may share a cell when the letter matches both spellings. A highlighted cell can still belong to a second unfound word.
Tip: after you find a word, scan its letters for the start of another listed word.
